    The Butts is a street and square of red brick houses located to the north west of Kew Bridge and developed in the 17th and 18th century by William Parish on part of Boston Manor's common ground. The name The Butts originates from medieval times when the land was set aside for archery practice as the 2nd Medieval Archery Law passed in 1363 made it obligatory for Englishmen to practise their skills with the longbow every Sunday. J M W Turner regarded as one of the founders of English watercolour landscape painting lived in The Butts in the late 18th century and in 1967 the area became a Conservation Area.
