The Old Mine House is substantially constructed of stone with some slate hung elevations under a slate roof. The distinctive house was built as the residence of the mine captain of Sortridge Consols in 1855, when copper production was at its height in the mine. Also intended to accommodate the mine manager, the house has two front doors and two staircases. It has been in the same family for almost 40 years and underwent a full refurbishment programme in 1994, when it was re-roofed, rewired and oil-fired central heating installed. The principal rooms have particularly high ceilings and the property still retains its lovely original Victorian fireplaces, panelled doors and sash windows. In addition to 'The Old Smithy', which served the mine, other substantial stone buildings within the grounds were sympathetically restored in 2006/7 by specialist craftsmen under DEFRA guidance; these include stables, double piggery and small privy, now used as a garden store.
