Burles Lodge was designed and built by the renowned Farnham architect Harold Falkner over several decades between 1937 to 1963 mostly designing the building as he went along. The house was his last project and intended as his own residence and reflects the eccentric and whimsical side of Falkner’s personality with little regard to prevailing conventions. It has an overall Georgian style with attractive red brick elevations under a tiled roof. At the last minute Falkner changed his mind and moved the main entrance from the front, to the back, of the property leaving unusual space which the current owners have adapted to give two bedrooms with en suites, an open plan kitchen reception room, plunge pool, sitting room and utility rooms. The lower ground area is connected to the main house by a circular staircase. The south facing end of the house has a weather board extension built by Falkner solely to accommodate an impressive reclaimed grand staircase, too large to fit within the original footprint of the house. Much of the materials used in the property’s construction are reclaimed, in particular the wood panelled drawing rooms, one of which has an 18c original painted panel set as a ceiling centrepiece.

To the ground floor the twin drawing rooms open onto a sun terrace with the formal dining room and kitchen/breakfast room beyond. A grand staircase leads to the first floor which has a more cottagey style leading to two further bedrooms, a bathroom and separate cloakroom. The gardens and timbered covered bbq combine to offer spacious and secluded al fresco entertaining facilities.

Steps lead to a substantial wooden sun terrace from which is a pleasant outlook towards the house and woodland beyond. A further circular sun terrace area adjoins the garden folly with distinctive ‘Palladium’ style pillars. The property is approached from the lane via a tarmac drive opening to a generous vehicular parking area extending from steps to a further area of formal lawn.
